Although I love cooking at home, I really enjoy going out together as a family on the weekends.  I am always on the lookout for farm-to-table spots that are eco-conscious and boast sustainable, locally grown ingredients, and Lyfe Kitchen in downtown Culver City is one such gem.  With various locations in California and one in Chicago (and hopefully more on the way), Lyfe (which stands for ‘love your food everyday”) uses locally and sustainably sourced ingredients, and they don’t stop there. Even their buildings and furnishings are created from sustainable materials: the foam in the upholstery is soy-based instead of petroleum-based, the table tops are made of bamboo. They use reclaimed wood that has been salvaged, and low-voltage Xenon lighting.  Not only is Lyfe’s decor sustainable and eco-friendly, the design and simplicity is stunning with exposed beams and brick, pendant lighting, and live herb boxes.  I love places like Lyfe because they allow me to feel good about what my family is eating-I feel great knowing that we are  putting natural, fresh ingredients in our bodies while simultaneously supporting local farmers.  Lyfe has tons of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options which fit our family perfectly, and their prices are super reasonable. Definitely a must go-to if you are in the area!

We headed out to Lyfe on Saturday for some much needed family time.  I got the Ginger Mint Chia (filtered water infused with ginger, lime, mint,  chia seeds, and strawberries) and Big C tried the Orange Ginger Chia (fresh-squeezed orange juice, filtered water, lime, raw ginger syrup, lemon verbena, mint and chia seeds).  The Ginger Mint Chia is refreshing and light even Little C likes it! Big C’s favorite at Lyfe is definitely the  fish tacos, grilled mahi with chayote slaw, avocado, green onion, cilantro, chipotle aioli, and salsa fresca on warm corn tortillas.  I am currently obsessed with the Farmer’s Market salad, composed of organic greens with blackberries, agave-pickled onions, spiced pecans, goat cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette-it’s heaven. HEAVEN.  I add a grilled free-range chicken breast for some extra protein.  Little C loves the Unfried Chicken with baked sweet potato fries, and we always get an order of the guacamole to share.  After lunch we walked over to the lion fountain which we frequent any time we go to downtown Culver.  Little C stares in awe at the lion statue and the water shooting up from the ground while Big C and I work hard to keep her from charging into the spray.  I love watching her as she tears around the fountains, with Big C not far behind. Oh and happy Friday! You made it! What are your plans for the weekend? Little C and I are sick once again so I foresee a lot of cuddles and humidifiers in our immediate future.
