Juicing: Pomegranate Juice and Bad Kitty Tee

Before we discuss how to juice pomegranates and their fantastic health benefits, let’s talk fashion for a moment.  My go-to outfit for most days is a great pair of skinnies, boots or chucks, and a cool graphic tee with a fun blazer. I love our two kitties so much, but they have been having some pretty big behavioral issues (coincidentally Daisy and Dexter will be making their television debuts on “My Cat From Hell” with Jackson Galaxy in a few months) so when I saw this “Bad Kitty” tee I HAD to have it. Isn’t this tee shirt rad? I’m pretty stoked that cat stuff is on trend for this season, because I am a cat fanatic and will buy just about anything if it has a kitty on it.

Ok-on to poms. Remember how I mentioned that we try to eat seasonally and locally whenever possible? Well, pomegranates are in season, and a friend of mine at work has a pomegranate tree (local and seasonal-win)!  He brings in bags filled with these gorgeous (and organically grown) fruits, which means lots of pomegranate recipes for our household; I use them in sorts of dishes, and eat them plain, but one of my favorite ways to consume a pom is to juice it.  Like kale from my post last week, pomegranates are considered superfoods. They are full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, have cancer-fighting properties, and taste AMAZING.

Benefits of pomegranates:

  • Full of antioxidants like tannins and polyphenols which combat the effects of free radicals
  • Contain tons of vitamin C (great for fighting the flu!)
  • Have high amounts of vitamin K which support bone health
  • Packed with vitamin B5 which aids in weight loss
  • Boast high levels of manganese, phosphorous, magnesium, calcium, and zinc
  • High in iron (and can help cure anemia)
  • Contain enzyme inhibitors that help to prevent cartilage damage
  • Encourage the body to secrete enzymes with anti-bacterial properties that fight all sorts of digestive ailments

Ingredients:

  • 3 large pomegranates

How to do it:

  1.  If you are not familiar with how to de-seed a pomegranate, this tutorial is my fav. The bowl of water trick is seriously the best.
  2. Once you have de-seeded your poms, simply drop the seeds into your juicer, and enjoy! So easy, so good for you.
  3. If you do not plan to juice right away, you can store your seeds in a tightly sealed container and refrigerate until you are ready to juice.
