Little C has always loved reading books about animals (one of her favorites is ‘Good Night Gorilla’), so when we told her we were going to see monkeys, zebras, and giraffes up close  at the zoo she was SO excited.  Considering that Big C and I have lived in Los Angeles for over six years and had never been to the LA Zoo, a visit was way over due.  We took the babe to the San Diego Zoo when she was about ten months old, but she wasn’t terribly interested at the time in the animals.  This trip was completely different, Little C was engaged and excited, her favorite animals were the giraffes and the chimps.  She loved that the giraffes were a family, and  pointed out a mommy, daddy, and two babies. She was amazed by how tall the male giraffe was (over 17 feet!). Her other favorites were the chimpanzees, several of which were carrying their babies on their backs.  One baby chimp was scampering around playing and crept up on it’s mother, giving her a scare. Little C thought it was so funny that the baby scared the mommy-she still has not stopped talking about it.  She was also, of course, impressed by the chimp mommy’s “boobies”, which she felt the need to point out to several bystanders-gotta love kids and their shameless honesty.  She was slightly afraid of the elephants, and found the gorillas really amusing (probably because one came up to the edge of the enclosure and decided to put on a show which involved taking a huge dump while intermittently staring back at the onlookers). All in all it was a great success, although there are certainly moments where my heart aches for the animals behind the cages….but that’s a discussion for another day. Happy Monday loves!
